Life·Fantasy: Jacky Tsai’s Homecoming Exhibition at Fosun Foundation Shanghai
23rd Jul 2021
Shanghai, China
Life·Fantasy opened at Fosun Foundation, Shanghai, on 23 July 2021, marking a homecoming for Shanghai-born, London-based artist Jacky Tsai.
His first large-scale presentation in mainland China brought together a decade of artistic exploration, paying tribute to the city where he grew up. The exhibition was open to the public from 24 July to 7 October 2021.
An introduction to Jacky Tsai, screened in the exhibition.
The opening brought together guests for a first look at a world where Chinese craftsmanship meets the wit and colour of Western pop art. The presentation spanned painting, sculpture and printmaking, alongside experiments with lacquer carving, porcelain and Su embroidery. Jay Chou sent a video greeting to celebrate the opening.
A centrepiece of Life·Fantasy was Parody of Jay’s Music, commissioned by musician and collector Jay Chou and shown publicly in mainland China for the first time. Created over a year, the work weaves together references to more than sixty of his songs, transforming shared musical memories into an intricate visual landscape. Selected works also incorporated augmented reality, bringing art, technology and sound into the viewing experience.
R Auto × Jacky Tsai
R Auto was the exhibition’s exclusive title sponsor. The collaboration extended Tsai’s imagery onto a MARVEL R art car, displayed in the foundation’s public spaces. The opening also included a charitable art-car donation ceremony, bringing the partnership beyond the gallery walls.
