MetaSkull — A Digital Exploration

Presented in 2022, MetaSkull brings Jacky Tsai’s signature skull motif into an animated, three-dimensional digital world. Developed with Froyo Games, the project extends his longstanding exploration of mortality and renewal, connecting Eastern cultural symbolism with the visual language of Western pop art.
The skull becomes a changing surface of vivid colours, intricate patterns and unexpected objects. Drawing on themes of poker, gambling and anti-war, the collection invites viewers to consider how imagery associated with death can also express imagination, humour and the possibilities of life.
From Motif to Motion
The film above explores the collection’s animated variations, revealing how pattern, movement and three-dimensional form reshape a familiar image. The lunar setting gives these works a sense of exploration, extending the floral skull beyond a fixed surface into a new visual space.
MetaSkull was presented at Digital Art Fair Xperience in Hong Kong in 2022. A unique looping MetaSkull video was also included in Sotheby’s Xperience Digital Art Auction that year, marking an important public presentation of the project.
