Jacky Tsai X Shanghai Tang 30 Years Anniversary
A Fusion of Heritage and Contemporary Vision for the 30th Anniversary
10th Apr 2024
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of SHANGHAI TANG and the arrival of the Year of the Dragon, the brand reunites with internationally renowned contemporary artist Jacky Tsai for a special capsule collection — a decade after their first collaboration.
Rooted in the symbolism of the auspicious dragon in Chinese culture, the project reinterprets traditional motifs through Tsai’s signature East-meets-West visual language. The intricate dragon imagery is composed of floral patterns and ornamental elements, echoing the vitality, prosperity and continuous renewal associated with the creature, while reflecting the refined craftsmanship that defines SHANGHAI TANG.
Through this collaboration, Tsai continues his long-term exploration of cultural hybridity, transforming historic iconography into a vibrant contemporary language and bringing new energy to one of China’s most iconic fashion houses.
Rendered in luminous red — the colour of celebration, fortune and new beginnings — the collection draws inspiration from the ritual of wearing new garments for the Lunar New Year, a custom that dates back to the Song dynasty. Silk fabrics with layered sheen enhance the movement of the dragon form, creating shifting tones of light that evoke both heritage and modern elegance.
The designs integrate traditional Chinese tailoring with contemporary aesthetics, translating cultural symbolism into a wearable visual narrative. Details such as the Mandarin collar — representing the flow of wealth and good fortune — and knot fastenings symbolising unity and harmony further reinforce the dialogue between tradition and innovation.
“A decade later, this collaboration feels like meeting an old friend who has been walking the same cultural path. Together we have consistently explored how Chinese heritage can live and breathe within a contemporary international language — and it is this deep mutual understanding that gives our work its unique energy and harmony.”
