During Reincarnation at MOCA Bangkok, Jacky Tsai spoke with The Cloud about the experiences and ideas behind his work. Published on 5 July 2023 in the magazine’s In Design interview series, the feature moves between his life in London, his Chinese cultural roots and the encounters with Thailand that shaped this exhibition.
The Cloud — East meets West
The conversation follows Tsai’s journey from design towards an independent artistic practice, exploring why self-expression became central to his work. It considers the skull as an image of renewal, the possibilities that emerged during lockdown, and the relationship between traditional imagery and contemporary life.
Through a walk around the exhibition, the interview also introduces works including Bangkok Skull, Parody of Jay’s Music and Tiger Express. These pieces connect personal memories and cultural encounters with the exhibition’s wider questions about regeneration and new beginnings.
