Jacky Tsai × PHANTACi — Art Takes to the Street
Artist of PHANTACi · 23 October 2021

23rd Oct 2021

Jacky Tsai joins PHANTACi for its 2021 Artist of PHANTACi series, bringing his distinctive visual language into streetwear. Released on 23 October 2021, the collaboration turns the garment into a new surface for an encounter between Chinese imagery and contemporary pop culture.

The collection moves between two contrasting moods: richly ornamented skulls on dark garments, and a lighter palette of colour, landscape and camouflage. Patchwork, prints crossing garment panels and washed finishes give the artwork a layered, tactile presence.

The collaboration also connects with Jay Chou’s interest in Tsai’s work. His panoramic painting Parody of Jay’s Music, celebrating Chou’s musical world, had been presented at PHANTACi Gallery in Shanghai.

From artwork to everyday wear

Rather than treating an image as a simple logo, the designs carry its detail across the shape of a sweatshirt or hoodie. Seen together, the pieces reveal how Tsai’s intricate compositions can change in scale and setting while retaining their character.

Colourful landscape imagery offers a playful counterpoint to the black skull pieces, extending the conversation between art and fashion into a collection made to be worn.
