Jacky Tsai’s First US Museum Exhibition — Crystal Bridges Men of Steel, Women of Wonder — a group exhibition at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
09th Feb 2019
Jacky Tsai’s first exhibition in a US museum took place at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, as part of the group exhibition Men of Steel, Women of Wonder. Presented from 9 February to 22 April 2019, the exhibition explored artists’ responses to Superman and Wonder Woman, from their comic-book origins to contemporary reinterpretations.
Tsai was represented by The Golden Fortune Tree (2017), a lacquer carving on wood panel. The work brings Western superheroes and figures from Chinese visual culture into a shared, vividly coloured landscape. Its meeting of traditional craftsmanship and popular imagery gives a distinctive cross-cultural perspective to the exhibition’s exploration of familiar American icons.

The presentation marked an important step in Tsai’s international exhibition history, bringing his work into dialogue with a wider museum audience in the United States.
