Chinese Floral Skull — A Landmark NFT Auction
Sotheby’s, 2021 — US$302,400

26th Oct 2021

In October 2021, Jacky Tsai’s Chinese Floral Skull achieved US$302,400 at Sotheby’s Natively Digital 1.2: The Collectors. Offered as Lot 37, the work was included in the inaugural sale on Sotheby’s Metaverse.

This was one of the notable early NFT auction results achieved by a Chinese contemporary artist, marking an important milestone in Tsai’s digital practice.

An interactive digital artwork, Chinese Floral Skull extends Tsai’s signature floral skull into a living composition. Animation and programming introduce responses to local weather, seasonal change and the Bitcoin Price Index, connecting traditional imagery with the possibilities of digital art. Flowers transform a symbol of mortality into one of renewal, an enduring theme within Tsai’s work.
