A first footprint: an artwork to mark the beginning of a life

In September 2024, Jacky Tsai was appointed Chief Art Consultant of Am-Sino Healthcare Group. The collaboration brings his artistic practice into the spaces and experiences surrounding maternity care, exploring how art can become part of a family’s earliest memories.

A limited-edition print created for the collaboration invites a particularly personal contribution: a newborn’s footprint, stamped onto the image of the Earth within the artwork. A small, physical mark turns each print into a record of an individual life beginning.

Set among astronauts, planets and imaginative figures, the Earth becomes the place where the baby leaves a first trace. Tsai’s colourful composition gives this intimate gesture a wider setting, linking the arrival of a new life with a sense of possibility and discovery.

Although the prints belong to a limited edition, the addition of each child’s footprint makes every finished work personal to the family. It is both an artwork and a keepsake: something that can be held, displayed and revisited as the child grows.

The accompanying film follows the work from the artist’s studio and the making and signing of the print to the moment a baby’s foot is gently pressed onto its surface.

The project extends Tsai’s interest in bringing art into everyday experiences, with care and emotional connection at the centre of the collaboration.

“This is the first time I bring my artistic language into the healthcare system. It is not about decoration, but about creating an atmosphere where people feel warmth, dignity and emotional connection.”
