A blend of the ironic allusion of Ukiyo-e woodblock wave prints and fading 1960’s Californian beach surfers images. Jacky’s Tsai saw his vision in Alexandre McQueen’s S/S 2008 Menswear Collection as a fusion of watered colour - the cold Eastern sea, starkly juxtaposed with suntanned Miami beaches. A farrago of detailed English floral patterns and the luster of the Orient.

Biography

Born in Shanghai, in 1984, Jacky Tsai came to London after completing a BA at the China Academy of Art to study at Central St Martins, quickly making an impact on the fashion world with his iconic Floral Skull design made for Alexander McQueen.

Tsai’s vision is to create an unique marriage between traditional Eastern craftsmanship with contemporary Western pop art. Since graduating in 2008, Jacky has been fascinated with bringing together these cultural extremes through his art.

His time at McQueen, where he worked in pattern design for the brand, created a fascination with fashion and textiles. Printing his striking images on silk, rather than paper, saw his floral skull image achieve critical acclaim.

His debut solo show in 2010 at Notting Hill’s Salon Contemporary saw him make his mark in the London art scene, while his inclusion at a private event held by Eyestorm at the Mayfair Hotel in 2011 saw all pieces sold.

A dynamic artist who constantly evolves his style, the 29-year-old is now concentrating on taking his art to the next level, creating his blend of conceptual and elegant art in different mediums.

This includes the extension of his Floral Skull idea into a stunning 1.6m skull sculpture adorned with a thousand leather flowers, and the launch of his eponymous fashion label Jacky Tsai, both of which incorporate his eye for combining reimagined concepts of beauty with an innovative approach to traditional materials and techniques.
